About Us
The Centre of Innovations for Public Health and Emergency Response (CIPHER) is a leading unit within the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS), under the School of Global and Public Health (SOGAPH) in Malawi. Established in 2020, CIPHER was founded to address public health challenges, including recent outbreaks such as cholera outbreaks, polio resurgence, and the COVID-19 pandemic, which have highlighted the urgent need for coordinated, evidence-driven responses.
CIPHER was created to deliver innovative solutions in public health, emergency management, and research, positioning itself as a key player in national and global health systems. Its mission is to provide sustainable, evidence-based interventions that address immediate crises while strengthening long-term public health resilience.
With a multidisciplinary team of public health experts, epidemiologists, medical doctors, nutritionists, and ICT specialists, CIPHER bridges science and practice. The team is committed to translating cutting-edge research into practical, community-level solutions. Through a focus on research, capacity building, and emergency response, CIPHER contributes to stronger, more resilient health systems—especially in underserved and vulnerable communities.
